India vs Australia: David Warner, Sean Abbott ruled out of the second Test against India in Melbourne
Cricket Australia’s strict bio-secure protocols ruled out Australia opener David Warner from the second Test of the four-match series against India in Melbourne.
India vs Australia: Star opener David Warner and pacer Sean Abbot ruled out of Boxing Day Test for biosecurity reasons.
Upcoming 2nd test match of The Border–Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia starts at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 26 and the teams have been training in bio-secure bubbles.
What is bio-secure bubbles?
A safe and secure environment that is isolated from the outside world to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.
David Warner and Sean Abbott reached Melbourne last Saturday hoping to avoid quarantine issues arising from the Sydney Covid-19 outbreak. But the team’s Covid-19 protocols prevented them from joining the squad in time for the Test, and Cricket Australia said Warner would not have recovered from in time anyway. Both Warner and Abbott were outside the team’s bio-secure hub to get treatment for their respective groin and calf injuries.
“While neither player has been in a specific ‘hotspot’ on Sydney’s northern beaches as outlined by NSW Health, Cricket Australia’s biosecurity protocols do not allow them to rejoin the squad in time for the Boxing Day Test,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.
Warner still hasn’t recovered fully from the groin injury, sustained during the ODI series. He had missed the series-opening day-night Test, while Abbott has recovered from a calf strain but he is unlikely to break into a playing XI that beat India by eight wickets last week. Australia are leading the four-Test series 1-0 after winning the pink ball match by eight wickets inside three days.
